Adharvad Health Support Program for Rural Elderly
In the quiet villages that dot rural landscapes, the elderly remain the heart of their communities — guardians of wisdom, tradition, and resilience. Yet, with advancing age come the silent challenges of ill health. Recent field surveys conducted under the Adharvad initiative across 14 villages have revealed a sobering picture: nearly four in ten elderly individuals live with hypertension, three in ten with high blood sugar, and many struggle with respiratory illnesses and restricted mobility. Despite these conditions, more than half lack regular access to medicines or medical supervision.
For most rural elders, the nearest healthcare facility lies miles away — a journey made difficult by poor mobility, limited finances, and scarce transportation options. Routine health check-ups are rare, and chronic diseases often remain undiagnosed or untreated. These challenges reflect a growing national concern — the rising burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among India’s rural elderly, with hypertension, diabetes, and cardiovascular and respiratory ailments being most prevalent.
Recognizing this pressing need, the Adharvad Health Support Program was conceived — a community-based initiative designed to bring healthcare directly to the elderly. The program envisions a structured, village-level health network to ensure that every senior citizen receives regular screening, access to essential medicines, and consistent follow-up care.
The program’s design is built on four foundational pillars:Access to Essential Medications – ensuring a continuous and reliable supply of prescribed drugs for chronic illnesses.
Monthly Health Screening Camps – conducting regular monitoring of vital health indicators such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and body weight.
Village Representative Engagement – training local volunteers to identify, track, and support elderly beneficiaries, building a vital link between communities and healthcare providers.
Health Education and Awareness – empowering elders and caregivers through workshops on disease prevention, nutrition, and healthy lifestyle practices.
Through this integrated approach, Adharvad aims not merely to provide medical aid but to restore dignity, independence, and well-being to rural elders. By establishing a reliable network of trained village representatives and ensuring consistent access to healthcare, the initiative strives to reduce preventable complications, hospital visits, and long-term suffering.
At its core, the Adharvad Health Support Program is far more than a healthcare intervention — it is an expression of compassion and respect, ensuring that those who once nurtured their communities now receive the care, comfort, and dignity they so deeply deserve in their later years.
